Diving has a long history in Dubai. At the time Dubai was just a small fisherman’s village, where locals were diving for pearls. 40 metres depth with just a nose plug and some protecting cloves. Nowadays you can enjoy the fish and ship wrecks while diving with full equipment. Several diving schools in the country provide classes and opportunities to gain your PADI scuba diving certificate. Thrill seekers can learn how to ‘free dive’. Stay as long under water as you can without oxygen.

Even though Dubai has several beaches with kitesurfing opportunities, the ultimate place for kite surfers is Kite Beach. During the day the water attracts more and more kite surfers who want to enjoy the pleasant wind conditions in the afternoon. Keep in mind that the wind conditions in Dubai are sufficient between December till March. Still a beginner? Book some classes and rent your material at one of the kitesurf schools.

Besides the big malls, Dubai offers great possibilities to wander around local shops. The Gold Souk, Spice Souk and Deira Fish Market are definitely worth a visit. You will buy the most beautiful souvenirs and for a little bit, you’re part of the traditional Arabic culture. Don’t forget to bargain, it’s a game and makes the shopping experience even more fun!

Surfing in Dubai

When you want to go surfing in Dubai, the best time to visit would be between December and March. Sometimes the good waves start in November and end in April. On average Dubai receives once or twice a week waves from about 1 to 1,5 meter high. Most beaches, except the artificial ‘palm’ and ‘world’ beach, receive excellent waves for surfing. Obviously a solution is provided for surfers who visit Dubai during summer. They can go surfing in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi. In the middle of the desert an immense pool is created with artificial waves. These waves are as strong as real waves, which creates an amazing surfing experience.

Even though Dubai is famous for all its constructions in the past century, certainly not everything is new. In Bur Dubai, south of Bay Creek, you still can find several historical sites. Bastakiya is one of the oldest neighbourhoods with cultural heritage. Wander through a labyrinth of narrow streets, admire the old Arabic windmills and traditional houses. Visit the Al Fahidi Fort which was once build to protect the city against attacks. It now harbours the Dubai museum. One of the oldest parts of Dubai is Deira, north of Bay Creek. Find your way through the small streets until you reach the souks, a great place to buy traditional souvenirs.

Dubai makes everything possible. So why wouldn’t you go skiing there? Go to the Mall of the Emirates. This large shopping mall houses the biggest indoor ski hall of the world. Five slopes, ski lifts, ski classes for beginners and a fun park gives you the winter sport experience of a lifetime, with an outside temperature of 30-45 degrees Celsius.
