The best way to get around in the state of Florida is by car. Public transport is available but isn’t as dense and well-organized as in many European countries. Rent a car and drive yourself. Driving in Florida is relatively easy. Most of the time you will drive on highways with several lanes. In the beginning you will need to pay close attention, but very soon you will find yourself completely used to the big roads.

Theme park

Florida houses many theme parks. Visit Walt Disney to meet your favourite Disney characters. Universal Studios will show you how movies are made while enjoying exciting rides. Beach Key West
Beaches

Florida is surrounded by water and has a coast of more than 2000 km. You can find the famous beaches Daytona Beach and Miami Beach on the east coast. Miami Beach is an artificial beach, popular among rich, older people that visit the place during winter to escape the colder Northern states of the USA. On the west coast you can find Clearwater Beach, a beach with plenty of shops and restaurants. The beaches of the islands Sanibel and Captiva are also worth a visit. Spend some time here and if you’re lucky you might even spot some dolphins.

Millenia Orlando
Mall & High street

You can find most big shopping malls close to major roads. The malls are often opened 7 days a week, from morning until late at night. They have free parking lots and offer besides all the shops also theatres, cinemas and restaurants. If you fancy a quick meal, go to the food court. Here, you’ll find a wide variety of restaurants. A couple of popular shopping malls in Florida are; International Plaza in Tampa, The Mall at Millenia in Orlando, Aventura Mall and Bayside Marketplace in Miami.

National Park Dry Tortugas
National parks

Florida doesn’t have many national parks, but the ones that are there are stunning. Visit Everglades National Park, the biggest subtropical wilderness in the USA. In this park a wide variety of flora and fauna can be found. Book a mangrove tour to see the alligators and crocodiles that live there. The Dry Tortugas National Park is situated in the Gulf of Mexico about 100 km west of Key West. The park covers a large area of water that protects the island group called Dry Tortugas. On one of the islands you can find Fort Jefferson, a fort that was used as a military basis and prison. In the waters around Fort Jefferson, you find excellent snorkelling opportunities.

Surfing in Florida
Surfing

The east coast of Florida is a perfect place to go surfing. Both, beginners and advanced surfers, can go surfing in Florida. Sadly, the waves are quite unstable. Sometimes the waters are filled with excellent waves for days in a row, followed by calm water for days. Surf legend Robert Kelly Slater learned to surf in Florida, which proves that the waves are certainly not bad! The best surf spots are Cocoa Beach and Sebastian Inlet. The waters of Sebastian Inlet have high waves excellent for advanced surfers. For slightly smaller waves Cocoa Beach is the place to be!

Kayak in the Everglades
Water sports

Since Florida is surrounded by water it has plenty of water sport possibilities. Go parasailing, jet skiing or try the relatively new sport fly boarding. Of course you could also go surfing, kayaking or paddle boarding. If you love fishing Florida is the place to be. The state is called the fishing capital of the world. All year around you can go fresh and salt water fishing. Especially the west coast is popular, but good fishing conditions are also available close to the Florida Keys. The waters south of the Keys are known to be one of the best fishing spots in the world.

Gatorland
Zoo

Florida has some great zoos, where you can enjoy a full-day out. SeaWorld is divided in 2 parts, an amusement park and zoo. The zoo owns plenty of aquatic animals like dolphins, killer whales, polar bears and walruses. Enjoy the amazing shows, go snorkelling with tropical fishes or swim with dolphins. The zoo Bush Garden’s, where you can meet tigers, elephants and Orang-utans, is also divided in an amusement park and zoo. Rather want to spent half the day in a zoo? Go to Gatorland. This zoo only houses crocodiles and alligators. Watch the show and if you’re brave enough touch a crocodile!

Shopping in Florida
Shopping

The USA is famous for its wide variety of shops. Depending on the exchange rate, it can become a remarkably cheaper experience than shopping in the EU. Explore malls or luxury shops. Florida has it all! Not interested in malls? Go to the big outlet stores. These stores are gigantic and sell brand at extremely low prices.

Miami Beach Florida
Local culture

Florida’s culture is unique. The Latin-American citizens took their culture with them when emigrating to Florida. Due to this, an interesting blend between Latin-American, Caribbean and North-American cultures can be seen in Florida. The Spanish language, Latin-American food and events and colourful buildings mix with high buildings, hamburgers and a well-maintained infrastructure. Relax at the beach, have a hamburger for dinner and end the day in a Latin-American bar while you dance the Rumba.
